What Type Of Computer Do You Recommend For A Joomla! Website?
Posted on April 11, 2009
First, I am not a computer whiz. I would like to buy a computer for my home that I can convert into a server, make a Joomla! website and upload it on the internet. I’d like to be my own server for my own site. It’d be nice to see my files from any computer with internet access. What type of computer do I need to purchase for this?

Ok. there are few conflicting statements here. 1)not a computer wiz. 2)upload to the internet. Not being a computer wiz you really do not want to embark upon setting up your own internet server - it’s just not going to work. That being said, there are a dozen programs out there that allow you to “see my files from any computer”, so that is not an issue.
So, walking away from the goal of setting up your own internet server, let’s move on to setting up a joomla system and building a joomla website. Get yourself a regular PC or Apple with a good amount of space and memory. 300+gb on the hard drive and 4-6mb on the memory should suffice just fine. I use a laptop - 320gb harddrive, 4mb RAM. (I would suggest a Linux system, but again, you are not a computer whiz, so I think a Windows or Apple system will serve you better. I am on Windows)
Now, to set yourself up to build your joomla site locally, install a PHP server environment such as WAMP. A great tutorial on installing this environment is at Urban Giraffe (See reference section). Although the tutorial is for installing a Wordpress environement, it is the same for Joomla, so just stop after installing WAMP.
Now you are ready to install your database, your Joomla, your theme, and get to work.
Once done, you simple export your database and import it into your MySQL database at your host (best Joomla hosts listed in reference section), Change your configuration.php to point to your new database and hosting environment, upload all of your files, and Walla - live site.
How To Joomla will show you most of what you need to know. Have Fun!
